All of us, if we are reasonably comfortable, healthy and safe, owe immense debts to the past. There is no way, of course, to repay the past. We can only pay those debts by making gifts to the future.
— from Canadian Cities and Sovereignty-Association, Jane Jacobs

When Jane Jacobs encouraged us to create The Center for the Living City, our commitment was clear; to promote increased civic engagement among people who care deeply for their communities.

One of our first projects was creating a book titled, What We See: Advancing the Observations of Jane Jacobs. The book contains ideas and reflections on her legacy from voices as diverse as Jan Gehl, Alexie Torres-FlemmingRay Suarez, Rahul Srivastava, Janette Sadik-Khan, Mindy Thompson Fullilove, and Jaime Lerner. Now, as we set the table to celebrate Jane's 100th birthday, we want to advance her ideas even further by making your "gifts to the future" part of the present.

As part of the international celebration of Jane Jacobs' birthday on May 4th, 2016, we are collecting gifts that we plan to assemble in what we are calling the Whole Jane Catalog. This catalog is patterned after Stewart Brand's groundbreaking publication of the Whole Earth Catalog.

Another part of our celebration is expanding our collaboration with Jaime Lerner and the launch of the Urban Acupuncture Network
Please watch this short video below, where Jaime invites you to add your gift of civic engagement to our global celebration.
